About Me

Hello you! Welcome to The Quiet Guide 🌻

I’m really glad you’ve found your way here. As always, relax, get comfy and let me properly introduce myself.

I’m Charlotte. I’m a shy person, a shyness coach and the human behind The Quiet Guide.

For a long time, I thought being shy was something I needed to change. I practically live for self-reflection and quite like a challenge, so naturally, I looked for ways to become more confident, stop overthinking and worry less about what other people thought of me.

I read some of the books, tried the advice and secretly hoped I’d eventually find the thing that would help me become a slightly different version of myself.

I don’t think there was anything unusual about wanting to change. Shyness can make things harder and it can get in the way of things we want to say, do or experience.

But somewhere along the way, I started to wonder whether I’d rushed past something rather important: actually understanding myself. You know, as the Ancient Greeks liked to say, know thyself.

After spending quite a long time asking myself, “Charlotte, how do I stop being shy?”, I changed my approach and the question.

Now I’m more likely to ask myself, “Why do I feel this way?”, “What am I worried might happen here?” and “What might my shyness be trying to protect me from?”

That change in perspective began as a bit of a quest for self-discovery (it’s a long path, for sure), but eventually it became something I wanted to share with other people too.

And after many hours battling with WordPress, The Quiet Guide was born.

So, what is The Quiet Guide?

Well, this is my little corner of the internet for talking about all things shy in life.

The overthinking, the conversation replays, the wanting to say something and not quite managing it. Worrying about what other people think, confidence, self-doubt and all the other beautifully messy bits that can come with being a shy human trying to make their way through this beautiful world.

I’m also interested in what happens when we become curious about those experiences rather than immediately trying to fix them.

Because I don’t believe meaningful growth requires us to reject who we are, to become louder, more outgoing versions of ourselves. For me, understanding has become an important part of change.

So you’ll find plenty of rambling and reflecting here, alongside ideas from coaching, psychology, a smidge of philosophy because I just can’t help myself, and all the things I’ve learned through my own experience of being shy.

I don’t have all the answers. I’m still a shy person, I still overthink and there are still so many moments when you’ll find me sat with the trees trying to work all this out.

Because, in all honesty, I’m figuring plenty of this out as I write. Which is why I went with guide, because I’m not one for authority and I’d rather walk with people than pretend I’m transformed and should be followed.

A little more about me

By day, I’m a certified health & life coach and a former children’s nurse, school nurse and deputy safeguarding lead. Well, that’s what my LinkedIn profile says.

While that’s all factually true, I like to think we humans are a little more than what we do, and definitely more than who we’ve been told we should be.

So, away from coaching and writing, I’m someone who loves books, coffee (I’m now a decaf gal, go me), running, nature and travelling to as many corners of the world as I possibly can.

I’m also someone who knows what it’s like to second-guess herself, feel unseen, worry about being judged and spend considerably longer thinking about a conversation than the conversation itself actually lasted.

Which is probably why I care so much about creating a place where shyness can be talked about a little differently.

And then there’s coaching

Alongside my blogging, I work one-to-one with shy and socially cautious people who want to understand themselves better and make meaningful changes in their lives.

My coaching isn’t about teaching you how to stop being shy or turning you into someone you’re not.

It’s a space to understand what’s happening for you, explore the patterns that may be keeping you stuck and find ways of moving towards the things that matter to you, with greater choice, flexibility and trust in yourself.

Because the aim isn’t to produce a new version of you. It’s to help you live more freely as the person you already are.

If you’d like to know a little more about how I work, you can have a wander over to my 1:1 shyness coaching page.

Otherwise, grab a cup of tea, have a look around the blog and see what you find.

Either way and just to say, I’m really glad you’re here.

I’ll see you soon,

Charlotte 🌻
